What’s involved in becoming a corporate partner with ACT?

Here, James Stevens, CEO of Cambridge Commodities, takes part in a Q&A, talking about how he balances running a business whilst also giving staff time to dedicate to fundraising…

What are some of the best comments you have had from staff about some of the highlights for them fundraising for ACT over the years?

The general feeling of camaraderie is where I feel the best comments come from. When two members of the team haven’t known each other well before an event and end up becoming best of friends by helping each other whilst helping the hospital.

  • How do you feel about where the money you raise is spent?

We donate our money without any specific restrictions on how the money should be spent – ACT are the experts and work closely with the hospital every day to make sure the money raised is spent where the need is greatest.

  • How many hours do your staff give to fundraising and what percentage of their working week does that equate to?

We give everyone one day per year fully paid leave to do charitable work and, in many cases, where requested we have extended this for people who want to go above and beyond.

  • As a business, how do you balance allowing your staff time to fundraise whilst also doing the important job of making money for the business?

There wouldn’t be fundraising if there was no business, but I feel both work happily together. Many of our customers and suppliers get involved in our charitable work which brings charity into our business communications.

  • What have you learnt from being a corporate charity partner?

We’ve learnt to listen to ACT staff and use their wealth of experience to help us in our endeavours. The collaboration and team spirit makes fundraising much more fun and successful.

  • What has your experience been of working with ACT?

It’s only ever been good. They are a great bunch of people who just want to help. They can get quite emotional on cheque hand-over day which can lead to tears all round!

  • Is there any advice you would give to other corporates thinking of becoming a corporate partner for ACT?

Do it! It’s brought a great sense of community to our business and helps with culture, teamwork and morale.
