Spectacular historical ball raises £100k for Cambridge Children’s Hospital

300 guests were welcomed to the Waterloo Ball at Stirtloe House last month, a spectacular party hosted by Cambridge Children’s Hospital Ambassador, Bronwen Angel and her husband Toby. The evening raised an incredible £100,000 for the new hospital.

The Waterloo Ball, themed on the 19th century Battle of Waterloo, saw hundreds of guests don authentic costumes from the period and enjoy a champagne reception (sponsored by HCR Hewitsons) and a three-course dinner.

Stirling House, where the event was held, had previously been lived in by someone who fought at the Battle of Waterloo, making the theme and venue a natural fit. Following the auctions, fireworks were lit to represent the first shots heard from the french army advancing from the East during the battle.

During the Ball a luxury raffle was held, as well as silent and live auctions where guests had the opportunity to bid for over unique and extraordinary auction lots, with lots ranging from a year’s supply of cakes to a week in Sri Lanka and even the opportunity to be a judge for the Great Taste Awards.

The money raised from the Waterloo Ball will help purchase a specialised operating table to be used in one of the new operating theatres in the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital.

Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) and the organisers of the Ball are grateful to all of the extraordinary sponsors, donors, and companies that so kindly supported this event, provided auction lots, and importantly helped to raise an incredible amount of money to help build the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital.

With Toby’s support, I have been an ambassador for Cambridge Children’s Hospital (CCH) for over five years and feel passionately about the importance of this project. As parents we cannot imagine how difficult it must be for families when children cannot be cared for locally and are sent miles away for treatment that they should be receiving near home. We are also pleased that the new hospital will help young lives much further afield than just the East of England and to know that we will have played a part in that.

Due to open in 2030, the Cambridge Children’s Hospital will be the first specialist children’s hospital for the East of England, and the first hospital in the world to care for children’s mental and physical health together under one roof. This new, purpose built NHS hospital will also integrate the pioneering Cambridge Children’s Research Institute within its walls. housing six collaborative research centres focusing on the most serious impediments to health and well being that children and young people face in the UK and globally. In short, the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital will treat children and young people in a whole new way, changing the shape of global healthcare right here in Cambridge.
