PICU - Paediatric Intensive CaRE
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Addenbrooke's is an eight-bed ward caring for sick children who need very close observation from doctors, nurses and other members of the PICU team.
Many of PICU's patients are admitted as emergencies, or transfers from other wards at Addenbrooke's or other hospitals. Some of PICU's patients have a planned stay in the Unit after an operation.
Every year about 500 children come through our unit, ranging in age from birth to 16. They come from all over East Anglia as Addenbrooke's provides the only specialist paediatric intensive care in the region. How support has helped us
- Ventilation equipment - donations have enabled us to have state-of-the-art ventilation equipment available for seriously ill children
- Retrieval equipment - additional and new equipment has made the team collecting patient from regional hospitals more efficient
- Courses and conferences - the ability to be able to fund staff development helps maintain a highly skilled, motivated and knowledgeable staff
- Support - smaller purchases assist in making life more pleasant for our patients and families

Our wish list
Our current priorities are to increase our facilities to properly equip and develop a successful international neuro unit, bringing our equipment in line with the most successful units in the world.
Our retrieval service, which is not maintained by the NHS, needs to be maintained and developed so very sick children can be brought from regional hospitals to Addenbrooke's for specialist care.
