Raising money for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Research Scientist, Grahame McKenzie, successfully completed Ironman France on 22 June in aid of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrooke's. Well done Grahame!

Grahame said: "My daughter, Freya, became seriously ill when she was just ten days old and was immediately admitted to PICU in a systemic septic state. She was very ill
and there were times when the worst appeared likely, but after three days of
amazing care from the PICU staff, she recovered and is now a lovely healthy
little 2-and-a-half year old. My wife, Anne, and I feel we owe the PICU
staff a huge debt and we would like to do everything we can to ensure that
future PICU patients receive that same extraordinary level of care that
Freya received, hence the fundraising effort."

"The event I'm taking part in is Ironman France. This is a long distance
triathlon which consists of (in order) a 2.4 mile sea swim, a 112 mile bike
ride through some serious mountains, and then a marathon (26.2 miles). So
it's a long old event. I have a time target but I'm keeping it to myself at
the moment as it's the first time I've raced over this distance, and so I
actually have no clue how I'll go.

"In terms of endurance sport, I've run a fair few marathons and a handful of triathlons, but this will be the hardest event I've ever done."
