The mobile CT scanner

POrtable CT scanner Appeal

The Neurosciences Department at Addenbrooke’s hopes to raise £254,000 for a high-tech CereTom portable CT scanner, one of the world’s first wireless, portable scanners.

A permanent mobile CT scanner is urgently required at Addenbrooke's and would be of enormous benefit to patients. By having this scanner permanently available the patient would not need to be moved – the scanner could be taken to the patient. It can be used throughout the Neurosciences Department – in theatre and on the critical care unit.

On the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit, CT scans are crucial to the care and outcome of patients. Currently it can take a team of staff up to one hour to move a very sick, ventilated patient down to the static scanner. It can be a dangerous journey as the brain condition could be aggravated or worsened. By being able to take the CT scanner to the bedside, scans can be performed in minutes with minimal disturbance.

Patient Anne-Marie Farrar (pictured right) is backing the appeal having had successful treatment at Addenbrooke's for a brain haemorrhage in 2005.

Anne-Marie said: "I know better than anyone how important CT scans are. And the mobile scanner will help the team at Addenbrooke's give faster scans, more efficiently and with less risk. Please help Addenbrooke's give patients like me CT scans without risk of causing further damage. Please make a donation towards the mobile CT scanner today."

Mr Peter Kirkpatrick, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke's, said:

"The permanent portable scanner will allow head scans to be performed by the bedside, saving time and reducing the hazards of taking very sick patients to a static facility. It is urgently required."

Mrs Helen Fernandes, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke’s, said:

“I can’t tell you how much it will transform patient care.”
