POrtable CT scanner Appeal
The Neurosciences Department at Addenbrooke’s hopes to raise £254,000 for a high-tech CereTom portable CT scanner, one of the world’s first wireless, portable scanners.
The scanner, which will be stored in the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, will be for use throughout the Neurosciences Department – on wards, in theatre and on the critical care unit.
It is urgently required and would be of enormous benefit to patients. By having this scanner permanently available the patient would not need to be moved – the scanner could be taken to the patient.
For example, on the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit, CT scans are crucial to the care and outcome of patients. Currently it can take a team of staff up to one hour to move a very sick, ventilated patient down to the static scanner.
Mr Peter Kirkpatrick, Consultant Neurosurgeon, said: "The portable scanner will allow head scans to be performed by the bedside, saving time and reducing the hazards of taking very sick patients to a static facility. It is urgently required."
Mrs Helen Fernandes, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke’s, said: “I can’t tell you how much it will transform patient care.”
