Projects and Activities

Botswana

In 2007, we established a Link with the Princess Marina Hospital, the largest referral hospital in Botswana in Gabarone, the capital of Botswana and its main teaching hospital. Through our Link we are also providing support to the Ministry of Health in developing healthcare services throughout Botswana, and to the University of Botswana as they open the country's first and only medical school at Princess Marina.

Other voluntary work

A number of Addenbrooke's staff undertake occasional voluntary work abroad. Addenbrooke’s Abroad actively supports staff to undertake work abroad with a project grant scheme (link to details and application form) and leave arrangements. Here are some examples of recent visits:

  • David Adlam (maxillofacial surgeon) repairs cleft lips and palates in Galle Hospital, Sri Lanka

  • Duncan Forsyth (geriatrician) teaches geriatric medicine in Malaysia

  • Rodney Wood (CSSD manager) is advising on a new sterile service department at Salaj Hospital, Romania, where Paul Allen (laundry manager) helped to replace the laundry some years ago.

  • Malcolm Kerr-Muir (ophthalmologist) operates on cataracts in Nigeria

  • Debbie Morgan (Assistant Director of Commissioning, Finance) provided administrative and human resources advice and support at Bwindi Community Hospital, Uganda
This opportunity is not just for doctors and nurses – as you can see, all sorts of skills are useful!
