Three Peaks Challenge
18 September 2008

Raising money for Addenbrooke's Hospital

1Spatial, 3 Peaks, 1 Big Challenge

On Thursday 18 September a team of 1Spatial (spatial information systems company) members of staff will set out to attempt the 3 Peaks Challenge.

The team have taken the challenge in a bid to raise £10,000 for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust. Proceeds will enable ACT to provide grants for a range of much-needed equipment and research to anhance patient care throughout Addenbrookes. Learn more about ACT here.

The 3 Peaks Challenge

The challenge comprises of hiking up the highest peak in England, Scotland and Wales in a 24 hour period.

The peaks will be attempted in the following order:

  1. Ben Nevis, Western Scotland (1344m)
  2. Scafell Pike, Lake District, England (978m)
  3. Mount Snowdon, Snowdonia, Wales (1085m)

Tackling the peaks will involve 26 miles of ascent and descent (that’s 42km in new money).  On top of that the team drivers will have to ensure that all the hikers are transported safely between the three locations, with total travel approaching 475 miles (765km). All that in just a 24 hour period!

This is a serious and strenuous undertaking, especially for a team that is based in the flat lands of the Fens. Some of the hiking will be at night to add an extra level of difficulty.

The 1Spatial Team

The team comprises of 15 walkers and 3 drivers plus some support crew back in Cambridge. The walkers represent a cross section of the 1Spatial staff at their Cambridge offices. The team have different levels of experience walking in upland Britain, which makes the attempt all the more challenging.

The team are preparing for the challenge by setting out on regular Thursday evening after-work walks around the Cambridgeshire country side, plus some more challenging weekends away to tackle some hills (something we’re seriously lacking in Cambridgeshire).

The challenge is not only intended as a great fundraising event but also is also a 1Spatial team building exercise. Members of 1Spatial staff from all departments are taking part, so it’s a great opportunity to build working relationships outside of the office.
